The return of the Tigers to the White City in 1964 was undoubtedly the event that ultimately led to the formation of
the Hawks - only Dick Barrie had previously seen any speedway meetings prior to this date.
While we owe a debt of gratitude to the Tigers, it would be fair to say that it was repaid many times over in the following
years.
Many of the Hawks were on the track staff at Hampden, with Ian Welsh and Ronnie Young being "pushers" there - nothing
to do with drugs I hasten to add!!
More notewothy was Colin Caffrey who scored over one thousand
points in the Tigers colours throughout the 80s. Dick Barrie was the presenter and program columnist at Hampden, Coatbridge
and Blantyre and, along with Neil Grant, was pivotal in the sport coming to Shawfield in 1988. Dick recruited Nicky Nicolson
as track announcer during the Blantyre era, which also saw Roy Varty and Tam Baggley in track action, with Tam making a number
of appearances in the Tigers team
Yes we certainly contributed to the Tigers over the years!!
